Tips From Hell, #8

To Drain a Soul:

1- Find someone who only values one portion of themselves.

For our example, we'll use a person who only likes their mind.
To make sure there is no hidden complacency about appearance, we'll use a woman. Women are your best bet, because they rarely think their looks are sufficient -- but to make even more certain, however, have that woman be past her prime. (If you can find one who's obese, even better…)
Don't forget to check and make sure she's not overly fond of the personality she has to work with, either. You don't want any unwarranted self-esteem getting in the way. Do not exceed an overall neutral perspective. For example, if your subject has truly good friends, be sure that her romantic life has never played out successfully. This will ensure that she feels inadequate and possibly even inept.

2- Beleaguer that which is valued.

The object here is to remove all faith the subject might have in themselves. Set the person up for repeated failures. If you've chosen a subject who values their mind, mess with it.  Make them feel stupid and inadequate by ensuring that they are given ONLY tasks they are unfamiliar with and unable to successfully complete in a timely fashion. Surround them with impatient, testy people who question what is taking them so long and why the task wasn't given to someone who knows what they are doing.
Be vigilant, however! Do not let any small triumphs slip in to bolster the subject's courage. They must not be allowed to succeed at anything.

3- Enlist the subject's Inner Critic.

The inner critic is your most valuable ally.
Make sure it is armed with a list of particularly perjorative adjectives to murmur incessantly.

4 - Deprive the person of sleep.

Do not skip this step!
Sleep deprivation is an important part in breaking down a person's defenses. If you cannot create a situation where the subject must physically stay up for long hours, then be sure they get broken, unrestful sleep. Worries, phobias, the inner critic, even loud neighbors and excessive heat… all of these should do the trick.

5- Remove supports.

Effective action here will be dependent on the subject.
You might have a supervisor's child get sick so they are not available for consultation. Perhaps a friend might pass away. Is there someone this person relies on to help them keep their balance? Have that person reach out during a time when the subject is unaware that their phone is off. (This is a two-fer. Not only will the subject be disappointed, but they'll feel stupid, as well. BONUS!) If there's a significant other in the picture, be SURE to have the s/o cancel a much-counted-on date.

6- Keep up the pace.

You don't want to give the subject any time to recover, so be sure to stay on top of the beleaguering. It must be constant and unending.

6a- Watch the calendar!

Whatever you do, don't schedule a drain near any holidays.
Holidays give your subject the time to rest and relax, thus bolstering their defenses.
R&R is the enemy of the soul-drain.

Have you been reading the SOP's under which the business I work for apparently operates these days??
Terribly effective and brutal tips you got here.

*Bump* And chocolate. Lots of good chocolate...

Damn, that's a description of a sociopath(s), Jz., or a torture program.

Dark, inhumane and completely uncivilized.

Kink's one thing but that's wicked.

Sending hugs and many many chocolate things.

It all felt a bit brutal from the receiving end, I can tell you…
(as I'm sure you've experienced yourself.)

Bless you for the chocolate - obesity be damned! :-)

I keep coming back to this but I have to admit, I still haven't figured out if you're expressing sympathy or issuing an indictment against me.
It was, however, an awful week, and I am probably still too raw from it to have any hope of objectivity.

I'll try again after eating all this chocolate and see if that changes my perspective… :-)

Thank you, sweetie.
Both are much appreciated.
(any hope that a little of that bourbon salted dark chocolate fudge might be among the bounty? ;-p)

Again, I would offer whiskey.
But it seems rather redundant.

Well, at least I'll have enough chocolate in my system to sop up the alcohol! :-)

Coming out of the lurking shadows to say I thought you might have had a camera on my life, as this is so frighteningly spot-on.

Jz., the first anon. was me, Dubs.

Thought I signed in.

And it was commiserations...;)

Well, hi, Lurker Kate!

That's why I made it Tips From Hell… I know I'm not the only one who gets pounded...
so it felt less whiny to make it an instruction sheet for inducing misery than to say, "let me tell all about the awful things that happened to me this week…"
;-)

We shall struggle through, my no-longer-lurking friend!

I suspected it must be commiseration but you know us m**children when we're rattled. ;-p
Thank you, no-longer-Anonymous Dubs! :-)
(would you care for some chocolate? I have plenty now…)

Whiskey and chocolate... Pretty tempting. Whiskey, chocolate and a good woman...better. W, C and a good, naked woman... best.

Take care. From your description, it can't get worse. Don't dwell on that last point. Don't overthink it. Chin up and get through! ;)

Thank you, Dubs.
I am trying.
If I make it through the week without dumping BG in a fit of self-indulgent cut-nose/face spiting, then I will call my efforts a success. (I *hate* how this crap leaks all over everything else in life.)

sometimes people are assholes. Even me. (shocking, I know)...
and sometimes it isn't about you, but about them and where they are and how convenient you are to be the one they snark to.

sometimes, dear friend, people are just assholes, and you're not...but the assholery spreads (isn't that a nasty little picture there?)...and leaves you feeling badly...when you shouldn't. Because, you know, *not* asshole.

sending hugs.

your asshole friend,

nilla

This really wasn't intended so much as an instance of assholery (which I think would make a great book title!) but rather a description of how stress and stupid little things can combine to make a big picture that is miserable.

I wasn't seeing any of this as a "me vs. the other" situation, so I'm not faulting anyone (except me for my coping skills) for the week I had. We all have areas of weakness, this just happened to be a period where all of mine got hammered at the same time. (Which lowers my defenses and makes the secondary weaknesses more vulnerable, as well.)

As always, however, I have lived to see another day. :-D
