A Q Quandry

Alrighty, well…

Q foods are kind of challenging to write about, as I honestly can’t think of a one of them that I’ve ever actually eaten. I’ve never had a quince, I’ve managed to avoid Quorn, and while I’m perfectly willing to try a queen cake, that just hasn’t happened yet.

So this one, I’ve got to fudge a little.
Today, my Q will be a Suzy Q.

You know how some people are about Twinkies? Or Hostess Cupcakes?
I’m a Suzy Q gal.

Yeah, it’s highly processed junk food - but me and my hardened arteries plan to die Very Happy anyhow, so that’s not going to stop me.

They’re also quite sweet - and again I ask, “so what’s your point?”

A Suzy Q is a luscious, light, moist chocolate cake sandwiched with a creamy, fluffy filling.
It’s not dry-ish, the way a Hostess Cupcake is, nor is it frosted. It’s more like a devil’s food Twinkie, but with an infinitely more satisfying proportion of filling to cake.

Of course, all that light moistness also means that you’ve consumed a massive amount of calories that fill you up about as well as air.

But it’s the best danged tasting air around!

By the fact that you eat this, i am gathering you are not the quinoa type, either. They sound so good, though, that i do not blame you for induling!

The day I wax lyrical about my fridge stocked with cucumber and coconut water to help me through this (sitting) challenge, you go on to describe this sweet deliciousness with such skill. Nicely played Jz. I may have to step out to buy some chocolate after all!

you mean you haven't tried quinoa? It's absolutely wonderfully delicious ... nope, I'm lying, it's sorta tasteless, with a weird texture - but it IS edible when hidden among other things like lots of stir-fried veggies or some good dressings!

Hi Jz - well the Suzy Q's sound like a once in a blue moon treat ... but I also am not a fan of Quorn or for that Quinoa - though that is better ... cheers Hilary

A blast from the decadent past ... sigh! Little Debbie's oatmeal cakes. Twinkies. Suzy Q's.... things I would never, ever eat anymore, but I once loved them. I really did. I especially loved chocolate-cake-type things with cream filling... I love visiting your blog. Even if I can't eat these things, I can read about them!

I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you over the sound of my snacks.

It could be worse. You could deep fry the Suzy Q and then eat it. I've had a deep fried twinkie once. To die for. MMMMM

Oh, man!
I completely forgot about quinoa! Yes, I do eat it - and keep a bag on hand in the cupboard. But even if I’d remembered (man, I can’t believe I forgot!), I’m not sure I could have come up with much to say about it. But I would certainly have altered my opening. :-)
(And really, Suzy Q’s deserve a post!)

I give you cravings, you give me guilt… it all works out in the end.
:-D

I have, I have! (see above) I’ve actually been eating quinoa since you could only find it in the health food stores. Not regularly, as there weren’t as many good recipes available back then but yeah…
Quinoa is good stuff… clearly not helpful for the memory, but good stuff…
;-p

H-
I’m afraid I lack discipline.
Once in a blue moon comes around a little more regularly in my life than in most…
;-D

L-
For me, it was Yodels, Funny Bones, and Suzy Q’s…
What was that you were saying about chocolate?
And thank you - I’m glad you enjoy stopping by. :-)

T-
Tom, Tom, Tom…
Where do you find these things?!?
That might be a chocolate line that even I wouldn’t cross…

A-
I’m not sure it would work, the way the filling oozes out all ‘round… but I would surely try one if offered!

Jz: I recently bought a box of Twinkies! (No idea what I was thinking, except "I used to love these when I was a kid!") I know exactly what you mean by tasty air! ;)

AND

@ Tom: Oh. Em. Gee. Z'all I'm sayin'.

I figure as long as the word "tasty" is there, everything's good. :-D

I KNEW we were destined to be friends, in spite of that Star Wars/Star Trek thing. I LOVE Suzy Qs! They are smaller than they used to be, though. My mom would buy them for my school lunches on days I "brought" instead of "bought". I would only get one, in a baggie. There was a cousin to the Suzy Q that I also loved. It was called a banana flip (sometimes it was called a Mickey Flip, maybe different manufacturers?) and it was a circle of moist, delicious yellow cake with a cream filling with a light banana taste. The whole thing was folded in half like a taco and was DELIGHTFUL.

SO true! (I can easily overlook your Spock ignorance, as that leaves the way clear for ME!)

YES!! The Suzy Q's of today are not the same size as they used to be. I didn't think so but then again, I'm much larger than I used to be (in all senses of the phrase) and wasn't entirely certain if it was just my child's memory distorting the picture. Thank you for the solidarity.
I don't think I ever saw the banana thing around here but rest assured, I'll try one for you should it ever cross my path!
